Stanley Tollman is known in the travel world as one of the true pioneers in the international tourism and hospitality market. He was born unto parents who had already made their mark in the South African hospitality industry so he grew up understanding the importance of keeping customers happy through innovative products and memorable travel venues. Following years of watching and learning the hospitality business firsthand, he went on to establish global travel companies and internationally famous restaurants. He is well known in the tourism scene as being the founder of the popular travel operations company, The Travel Corporation.
Experience Reigns
When Stanley Tollman was a student in Johannesburg, South Africa, he helped finance his studies by working in the kitchen of The Palace, a restaurant his parents built from the ground up. As his first real world experience in the food and beverage industry, he not only learned about the preparation and serving of food, but also developed a taste for fine cuisine.
Soon thereafter, Stanley Tollman met his wife to be, Bea. They married and began a life together in the hospitality business. Their first joint endeavor was The Nugget, an establishment that they created as newlyweds in Johannesburg. Stanley Tollman was responsible for the front section of the hotel and Bea Tollman oversaw the food being prepared in the kitchen. In this first business initiative, they built a name for themselves that continued as they progressively established more eating establishments in the city, such as the Colony Restaurant located in the Hyde Park Hotel as well as the Contented Sole and The Hideaway. In fulfilling Stanley's lifelong dream of creating a supper club in South Africa, the couple opened The Stable. The discotheque was a boutique venue that offered elegant dining, dancing and international entertainers.
Rebuilding Travel Connections in England
During a severe financial crisis, Stanley Tollman's family suddenly found themselves losing their investments and holdings in South Africa. They envisioned the turn of events as an opportunity to move to the UK, where they still owned property and a percentage in Trafalgar Tours, a travel operator service. With that as a business base, Stanley Tollman expanded on Trafalgar Tours and developed it into a large and prestigious travel firm. With time, he established The Travel Corporation, a name now synonymous with high quality travel and leisure packages, representing more than 25 of the top names in travel services.
Remembering and Promoting South Africa
While Stanley Tollman helped transition the global travel market into one that offers affordable and exciting travel experiences, he has always continued to invest both time and energy in promoting his South African homeland. When his 80th birthday came around in 2010, The Travel Corporation held a sales convention in South Africa that honored both the country and the man. Delegates showed up from around the world and got a true taste of South Africa. As a gift to the nation and in conjunction with his birthday, Stanley Tollman generously donated monetary gifts to five foundations in South Africa.
